Kingston, NY -- The Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby, turning 22 this year, is an annual parade of non-motorized kinetic sculptures that roll down lower Broadway in the Rondout-West Strand Historic District ofKingston, NY.   This year’s Derby happens Sunday August 20, 2017 starting at noon but spectators are welcome earlier to watch the entries line-up, along Broadway between West Union and Spring Streets.

The Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby brings thousands of spectators the area to experience a day of art, entertainment, and good clean fun.   The dazzling, unique, and often wacky original vehicles roll down the hill one-by-one, under their own gravity power, to be judged for excellence and creativity (by a panel of judges and the public).  The day concludes with an awards ceremony, where the soapbox creators receive prizes (including one-of-a-kind trophies) and spectators become part of the experience at the soapbox "Car Show" on the West Strand.

Say organizers Sarah Olivieri and Sarah Bissonette-Adler, “this year our primary focus is to bring more artists to the Derby as active participants, plus improve the experience for spectators with more entertainment at the ‘Derby Car Show’ after entries complete their runs.”

The Artist Soapbox Derby is a truly unique family-friendly event that highlights Kingston’s vibrant arts community by drawing entrants and spectators from far and wide. Beyond the day of the event, the Derby encourages local community organizations to join in the fun and build a soapbox car as a team.

Co-Chair Sarah Bissonnette-Adler says, "We are really excited that the Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby has found a new nonprofit partner, Hudson Valley Community Productions (HVCP) run by Jeanne Fleming; the same organization that puts on Sinterklaas in Rhinebeck and Kingston."  They are joined by a fabulous group of volunteers who are committed to returning the event to it’s former glory with a goal of attracting 10,000 spectators and 20-30 entries!
